In 2001, Boston artist, Ave Maria Siecinski, a resident and business owner in Hyde Park, was commissioned by the President and CEO of Filene’s Department Store to create a painting representing the history of Filene’s. After a year long study of archival photographs and various pieces of historic reference, the painting was created and hung in the Corporate Office reception area in Boston.
The painting, measuring 6’x6’, depicts portraits of William Filene, the original founder and his sons Lincoln and Edward, their first store in Lynn, Massachusetts and details of the inception of their landmark location in Boston’s Downtown Crossing, which also houses the world famous Bargain Basement. The center focuses on the Boston clock, an historic landmark known throughout the city.
When Filene’s closed its Corporate offices, the painting was donated to the Boston Public Library.
